Aliens anyone?
There are many scientists that do believe that life has evolved on
other planets. However, this theory is not excepted by many others
in the scientific community. The definition of alien is a species
or organism that does not belong in a given place or area and this
species was accidentally or purposely brought to this location
through human activity. Thus an extraterrestrial is an organism
that is outside of earth. The words UFO, alien, and
extraterrestrial are now synonymous with each other and most
likely the creation of ufology and radio astronomy have
contributed to this change in the meaning of these words. In all
reality extraterrestrial life is still only a hypothetical theory
in many people's eyes. There is no conclusive evidence that is
widely accepted by the scientific community. Even ufologists who
do the research do not accept the claims that we have already been
visited by UFOs. There are theories though that life has begun on
other planets. One such theory is the panspermia theory that
believes that life possibly was created in one place and spread
throughout the universe to all habitable planets. This branch of
science is called Astrobiology or xenobiology; they study life in
the entire universe.
Since it takes carbon and water to survive on earth, this is still
believed to be the choice of life for other planets. However,
there has been discussion on a very small chance of silicon based
life. Neil deGrasse Tyson who works for the American Museum of
Natural History believes that since the chemical composition
needed for life on earth is hydrogen, oxygen, and carbon as 95% of
the human body and all other life that the structure of carbon is
the easiest to bond to other elements and even itself, could
result in a carbon based life form.
Another scientist defines life as needing three elements:
1. Able to produce offspring
2. Ability to mutate
3. The ability to inherit these mutations as offspring.
If this is true and operates throughout the entire universe than
carbon, water, and atmosphere are also favourable temperature
adjustments would be posed on other planets. Thus allowing the
planet to evolve just as earth does. Aliens too could have
different forms, shapes, and functions just as life on earth does.
Astronomers and scientist continue to look for life on other
planets. Though some earth like planets have been found, they have
yet to find any life there on. Some are too far from the sun to
receive any light or heat, others are still too rocky or do not
have enough water. As of right now earth is the only planet with
life, however it is not to say there will never be life found
elsewhere. |
